Another highly regarded Connecticut landmark and state park, Chapman Falls is a 60+ foot waterfall located in Devil's Hopyard State Park and as such offers very well maintained trails and parking. As with most Connecticut waterfalls, Chapman Falls is very dependent on seasonal rainfall so best time to shoot would be the spring thaw just as the trees bloom green or after a wet Autumn rainfall when the leaves turn yellow/red. And, as is the case with most state parks, avoid the weekend/holiday crowds if you want to shoot the falls and remember the falls faces south-west so late afternoon/early evening for best light.

Hike Effort: 

Distance: 1/10 (Short, 100 yard walk from the parking lot) 

Difficulty: 3-4/10 (Easy, but sometimes slippery trail to the photo spots.

Parking: 10/10 - (Being a state park, there is a paved parking lot about a short, 100 yard walk to the top of the main falls.)

While at Chapman Falls, you can also try to shoot Sheepskin Hollow Falls located only 2 or 3 miles from Chapman and is located in Sheepskin Hollow Preserve. I've never been able to get a nice shot there as it's also a very seasonal waterfall.

Another nice little side trip while in Haddam is the Cascades at Chapman Pond Preserve located only 4 or 5 miles from Devil's Hopyard. This is a nice little preserve used mostly by bird watchers/photographers but would be a nice little cascade to shoot but I've never been able to catch the cascade with any significant water runoff. And yet another photogenic location near Haddam (not a waterfall) is Gillette Castle State Park only 5 or 6 miles from Chapman Falls offers a really beautiful place to shoot the Connecticut River as it flows south towards Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean.
